Chevrolet Silverado Tire Sizes

The Chevrolet Silverado covers more ground than almost any nameplate — from the light-duty 1500 on 17- to 22-inch wheels to the heavy-duty 2500 HD and 3500 HD on load-rated LT tires and dually fitments. Here's every current size by trim, how the 1500 has changed across four generations, and what you can safely step up to.

Tire sizes by generation

  • Fourth-generation 1500 (2019–present) (2019–present)

The current light-duty 1500 spans 255/70R17 on the Work Truck up through 18-, 20-, and 22-inch wheels on LT, RST, LTZ, and High Country (265/65R18, 275/60R20, 275/50R22), with the off-road Trail Boss and ZR2 on 275/70R18. Alongside it, the heavy-duty 2500 HD and 3500 HD run larger load-rated LT sizes — 235/80R17, 265/60R22, the HD ZR2’s 305/70R18, and 235/80R18 on dually 3500 models — on their own redesign cadence (the current HD arrived for 2020).

  • Third-generation 1500 (2014–2018) (2014–2018)

The K2XX Silverado 1500 — 255/70R17 on base trims, 265/65R18 in the middle, and 275/55R20 on the 20-inch packages.

  • Second-generation 1500 (2007–2013) (2007–2013)

The GMT900 trucks ran 245/70R17 and 265/70R17 on most 1500s, with 265/65R18 and 275/55R20 on uplevel trims.

  • First-generation 1500 (1999–2006) (1999–2006)

The original GMT800 Silverado rode mostly on 16- and 17-inch wheels — 245/75R16, 265/75R16, and 265/70R17. Heavy-duty models used larger LT sizes like 215/85R16 and 245/75R16. Confirm the exact size against your door placard.

Upsizing your Chevrolet Silverado

The 1500 is a favorite for leveling kits and larger tires: trims on 18-inch wheels (265/70R18 is about 32.8 inches) commonly move to 33s with a leveling kit, and 35s with a small lift and some trimming. The ZR2 already runs 33s (275/70R18). On the 20- and 22-inch street trims there's little sidewall, so aggressive sizes usually mean swapping down to 18-inch wheels first. The heavy-duty 2500 and 3500 are a different story — their tires are governed by load range and payload, so stay with an equivalent load-rated LT tire rather than chasing size. Oversizing anything slows the speedometer and affects towing and payload behavior until it's corrected; always re-check clearance at full steering lock and full compression.

Frequently asked questions

What size tires does a Chevrolet Silverado use?

It depends on whether it’s a 1500, 2500 HD, or 3500 HD, and on the trim. On the current 1500, the Work Truck uses 255/70R17; LT, RST, LTZ, and High Country run 18-, 20-, or 22-inch wheels (up to 275/50R22); and the Trail Boss and ZR2 use 275/70R18. The heavy-duty 2500/3500 trucks use larger load-rated LT sizes such as 235/80R17 and 305/70R18 (and 235/80R18 on dually 3500s). See the table above for your exact trim.

Are Chevrolet Silverado tires staggered?

No. The Silverado uses a square setup — the same size on all four corners — so tires can be rotated normally. (Dually 3500 models carry four matching rear tires plus two fronts, all the same size.)

Can I fit 33- or 35-inch tires on a Silverado 1500?

The ZR2 comes on 33s (275/70R18). On other 1500 trims, many owners fit 33s with just a leveling kit, while 35s generally need a small lift and some trimming. The 20- and 22-inch street trims have little sidewall, so a wheel swap to 18s is the usual first step — always check at full steering lock and full compression.

What's the difference between 1500 and 2500/3500 HD tires?

The light-duty 1500 uses passenger/LT truck tires in the 17–22-inch range chosen mostly for ride and looks. The heavy-duty 2500 HD and 3500 HD use load-rated LT tires (and dually fitments on many 3500s) sized for payload and towing — so on an HD truck, match the factory load range, not just the dimensions.

Where's the correct tire size for my exact Silverado?

The definitive source is the tire information placard on your driver's-side door jamb, or your owner's manual. The sizes here are the factory fitments by trim; if your truck has aftermarket wheels, the placard still shows what it left the factory with — and on HD trucks, confirm the load range too.
