Jeep Wrangler Tire Sizes

The Jeep Wrangler is the most-upsized vehicle on the road — but it's worth knowing the factory sizes first. Today's JL runs from a 245/75R17 on the Sport to a 35-inch 315/70R17 on the Rubicon 392. Here's every current size by trim, how fitment has grown across four generations, and what you can safely step up to.

Tire sizes by generation

  • JL (fourth generation) (2018–present)

The current Wrangler. Sport and Sport S run 245/75R17; the Sahara steps up to 255/70R18; Rubicon, Willys, and Rubicon X wear 285/70R17 (about a 33-inch tire); and the Rubicon 392 and Xtreme Tire Package run 315/70R17 (about 35 inches) — the largest tire Jeep has ever fitted to a factory Wrangler.

  • JK (third generation) (2007–2017)

Ran 16- to 18-inch wheels. Base Sport trims on 225/75R16, the Sahara on 255/70R18, and the Rubicon on 255/75R17 — a roughly 32-inch all-terrain.

  • TJ (second generation) (1997–2006)

The last 15-inch-wheel Wrangler. Base trims on 205/75R15 and 215/75R15, off-road packages on a 30X9.50R15 flotation tire, and the Rubicon (introduced for 2003) on 245/75R16.

  • YJ (first generation) (1987–1995)

The original square-headlight Wrangler used 15-inch tires — 205/75R15, 215/75R15, and 225/75R15. Confirm the exact size against your door placard.

Upsizing your Jeep Wrangler

No vehicle gets upsized more often than the Wrangler. On the current JL, the Rubicon's 285/70R17 (about 33 inches) and the 392/Xtreme's 315/70R17 (about 35) are already large, and 35s fit most JL Rubicons with minimal trimming — many owners run 37s with a modest 2–2.5-inch lift and some fender work. Non-Rubicon trims on smaller wheels have less clearance and taller gearing, so going past 33s usually means re-gearing the axles to keep the truck driveable and the speedometer honest. Because the Wrangler articulates so far, re-checking clearance at full steering lock and full suspension flex matters more here than on almost anything else.

Frequently asked questions

What size tires does a Jeep Wrangler use?

It depends on the generation and trim. On the current JL (2018–present), the Sport and Sport S use 245/75R17; the Sahara uses 255/70R18; the Rubicon, Willys, and Rubicon X use 285/70R17; and the Rubicon 392 and Xtreme Tire Package use 315/70R17. Older generations ran smaller 15- to 18-inch sizes — see the table above for your exact year.

Are Jeep Wrangler tires staggered?

No. The Wrangler uses a square setup — the same size on all four corners — and the full-size spare on the tailgate matches, so a complete set that includes a matching spare is five identical tires.

Can I fit 35-inch tires on a Wrangler?

On the current JL, the Rubicon 392 and Xtreme package already come on 35s (315/70R17), and most JL Rubicons fit 35s with minimal trimming. Non-Rubicon trims usually need a small lift and often re-gearing to run 35s well. Always check at full steering lock and full suspension flex.

Do all Wrangler trims use the same tire size?

No. Even within the current generation the Sport (245/75R17), Sahara (255/70R18), Rubicon (285/70R17), and Rubicon 392 (315/70R17) all differ. Match the size to your specific trim and package.

Where's the correct tire size for my exact Wrangler?

The definitive source is the tire information placard on your driver's-side door jamb, or your owner's manual. The sizes here are the factory fitments by trim; if your Wrangler has aftermarket wheels or a lift, the placard still shows what it left the factory with.
