Upsizing your Tesla Model Y

The Model Y shares the EV tire realities of the Model 3, amplified by its extra weight: tires wear faster and need an adequate load rating, so replace with an equivalent extra-load (XL) tire. Range and noise are sensitive to tire choice — the factory low-rolling-resistance, often foam-lined tires are what deliver the rated range, and switching to a grippier or heavier non-EV tire reduces it. Note the Performance's 21-inch setup is staggered (wider rear), so those tires aren't interchangeable front-to-rear. For every trim, the best move is to keep the factory size and an EV-oriented tire.

Frequently asked questions

What size tires does a Tesla Model Y use?

Long Range and AWD trims use 255/45R19 on the 19-inch wheels or 255/40R20 on the 20-inch; the refreshed rear-wheel-drive Standard adds a 235/55R18 option; and the Performance uses a staggered 255/35R21 front / 275/35R21 rear. See the table above for your exact year and trim.

Are Tesla Model Y tires staggered?

Only the Performance, which runs a staggered 255/35R21 front / 275/35R21 rear (wider at the back, not interchangeable front-to-rear). Every other Model Y trim uses a square setup — the same size on all four corners.

Do the tires affect a Model Y’s range?

Yes. The factory tires are low-rolling-resistance and often foam-lined for quietness; switching to a grippier or heavier non-EV tire can measurably cut range and add road noise. The 20- and 21-inch wheels also give up a little range versus the smaller wheels. Staying with the factory size and an EV-oriented tire preserves the rated efficiency.

Why is there foam inside Tesla tires?

Many Model Y tires have acoustic foam bonded inside the tread to reduce cabin noise — valuable in a quiet EV. A foam-lined (acoustic) replacement keeps the car as quiet as it was from the factory.

Where's the correct tire size for my exact Model Y?

The tire information placard on the driver's-side door jamb lists the factory size and pressures, and the car's touchscreen shows recommended pressures too. If your Model Y has aftermarket wheels, the placard still shows what it left the factory with — and on a Performance, note the separate front and rear sizes.
