Toyota 4Runner Tire Sizes

The Toyota 4Runner's factory tire size has grown steadily over six generations — from 15-inch tires on the 1984 original to 20-inch wheels on today's Limited and 18-inch all-terrains on the off-road trims. Here's every current size by trim, how the fitment changed generation to generation, and what you can safely step up to.

Tire sizes by generation

  • Sixth generation (2025–present)

All-new on Toyota's TNGA-F body-on-frame platform, shared with the current Tacoma and Land Cruiser. The SR5 runs 245/70R17; TRD Sport, Limited, and Platinum ride on 20-inch wheels with 265/55R20; and the off-road TRD Off-Road, TRD Pro, and Trailhunter wear 265/70R18 all-terrains.

  • Fifth generation (2010–2024)

One of the longest production runs of any modern SUV — fifteen model years on the same core fitments. SR5 and the off-road/TRD trims ran 265/70R17, while the Limited moved to a 20-inch wheel on 245/60R20.

  • Fourth generation (2003–2009)

Base V6 trims used 265/70R16, Sport and V8 models stepped up to 265/65R17, and from 2006 the Limited offered an 18-inch wheel on 265/60R18.

  • Third generation (1996–2002)

Base trims wore 225/75R15, with uplevel and 4x4 models on 265/70R16.

  • Second generation (1990–1995)

Ran 225/75R15, with the SR5 offering a 31X10.50R15 flotation tire for more off-road bite.

  • First generation (1984–1989)

The original mini-SUV used 15-inch tires (225/75R15), with a 265/70R16 fitment appearing on some later trims. Confirm the exact size against your door placard.

Upsizing your Toyota 4Runner

The 4Runner is one of the most commonly re-tired SUVs on the trail. On the current sixth gen, the off-road trims already wear a 265/70R18 that stands about 32.6 inches tall, so a true 33-inch tire (for example 285/70R17 on a 17-inch wheel swap, or 275/70R18) usually fits with little or no trimming. The 20-inch TRD Sport, Limited, and Platinum trims run a shorter-sidewall 265/55R20 (about 31.5 inches) with tighter fender clearance, so aggressive sizes there typically want a wheel swap down to 17s or 18s first. The long-lived fifth gen (2010–2024) is a favorite for upsizing too — its 265/70R17 is about 31.6 inches, and 33s are common with a small leveling kit and minor trimming. On any generation, moving to 34s or 35s calls for a proper lift, will throw off your speedometer until recalibrated, and should be checked at full steering lock and full suspension compression.

Frequently asked questions

What size tires does a Toyota 4Runner use?

It depends on the generation and trim. On the current 2025–2026 (sixth-gen) 4Runner, the SR5 uses 245/70R17; the TRD Sport, Limited, and Platinum use 265/55R20; and the off-road TRD Off-Road, TRD Pro, and Trailhunter use 265/70R18. The long-running 2010–2024 generation used 265/70R17 on most trims and 245/60R20 on the Limited — see the table above for your exact year.

Are Toyota 4Runner tires staggered?

No. The 4Runner uses a square setup — the same size on all four corners — so tires can be rotated normally and you only need one size when shopping.

Can I fit 33-inch tires on a 4Runner?

Often yes. The current off-road trims (265/70R18) and the 2010–2024 generation (265/70R17) both run close to 32 inches stock, so a true 33 usually fits with a small leveling kit and minor trimming. The 20-inch street trims have less sidewall and fender clearance, so a wheel swap to 17s or 18s is the usual first step — always check at full steering lock and full compression.

Do all 4Runner trims use the same tire size?

No. Within the current generation the SR5 (245/70R17), Limited (265/55R20), and TRD Pro (265/70R18) all differ. Match the size to your specific trim and wheel package.

Where's the correct tire size for my exact 4Runner?

The definitive source is the tire information placard on your driver's-side door jamb, or your owner's manual. The sizes here are the factory fitments by trim; if your 4Runner has aftermarket wheels, the placard still shows what it left the factory with.
