Toyota RAV4 Tire Sizes

The RAV4 is America's best-selling non-pickup, and its tire size has grown from 16-inch wheels on the 1996 original to 20-inch wheels on today's sportier trims. Here's every current size by trim, how fitment changed across six generations, and what fits if you want to step up.

Tire sizes by generation

  • Sixth generation (2026–present)

All-new for 2026. The LE runs 235/65R17; the SE, XLE, and XLE Premium use 235/60R18; the rugged-look Woodland rides on 235/65R18; and the sporty XSE (and the Limited's optional package) step up to 235/50R20.

  • Fifth generation (2019–2025)

LE and XLE trims on 225/65R17, the XLE Premium, Adventure, and TRD Off-Road on 225/60R18, and the Limited on 235/55R19. This generation added the off-road-styled Adventure and TRD trims (still same-size all-terrains, not a lift).

  • Fourth generation (2013–2018)

Base trims on 225/65R17, with uplevel trims on 235/55R18.

  • Third generation (2006–2012)

A larger RAV4 (optional V6 and third row) on 215/70R16, 225/65R17, and 235/55R18 depending on trim.

  • Second generation (2001–2005)

Ran 16-inch wheels — commonly 215/70R16, with 235/60R16 on some trims.

  • First generation (1996–2000)

The original compact RAV4 that launched the crossover segment used 16-inch tires (215/70R16 / 235/60R16). Confirm the exact size against your door placard.

Upsizing your Toyota RAV4

Unlike the body-on-frame trucks, the RAV4 is a unibody crossover with limited room for larger tires. Most owners stay with the factory size or step to an all-terrain in the same dimension — popular on the Woodland, Adventure, and TRD Off-Road trims for light trail use. Going up in overall diameter is constrained by wheel-well clearance and will affect both the speedometer and the AWD/hybrid system's calibration, so the big oversizing that works on a truck isn't practical here. The best move is to keep close to the factory overall diameter and, if you want more grip, change tire type rather than size.

Frequently asked questions

What size tires does a Toyota RAV4 use?

It depends on the generation and trim. On the all-new 2026 (sixth-gen) RAV4, the LE uses 235/65R17; the SE, XLE, and XLE Premium use 235/60R18; the Woodland uses 235/65R18; and the XSE (plus the Limited’s optional package) uses 235/50R20. The 2019–2025 generation used 225/65R17, 225/60R18, or 235/55R19 depending on trim — see the table above for your exact year.

Are Toyota RAV4 tires staggered?

No. The RAV4 uses a square setup — the same size on all four corners — so tires can be rotated normally and you only need one size when shopping.

Can I put all-terrain or bigger tires on a RAV4?

You can fit an all-terrain tire in the factory size — that's a popular choice for the Woodland, Adventure, and TRD Off-Road trims — but the RAV4's unibody wheel wells and AWD/hybrid calibration leave little room to go up in overall diameter. For meaningful size increases you'd be looking at a body-on-frame vehicle instead; on a RAV4, change tire type rather than size.

Do all RAV4 trims use the same tire size?

No. Within the current generation the LE (235/65R17), XLE (235/60R18), and XSE (235/50R20) all differ. Match the size to your specific trim and wheel package.

Where's the correct tire size for my exact RAV4?

The definitive source is the tire information placard on your driver's-side door jamb, or your owner's manual. The sizes here are the factory fitments by trim; if your RAV4 has aftermarket wheels, the placard still shows what it left the factory with.
